Living in parking lots
Living in a school bus is a very nice, but challenging life style. It definitly worth the experience, but it also means : a lot of organization. Let me give you a quick overview of how we organize for our primary needs.
By the way, we’re in Whistler at the moment. It’s our first stop. After finishing to modified the bus, we left Québec and crossed United States beginning of October 2008 and then parked in Pemberton until somebody broked our windshield… Now we’re living here and there in Whistler area. We’re planning to stay until July. After, we’ll move to Kelowna for one or two months and we’ll hit the road again… Heading up to Yukon Territories and Alaska. The goal of the trip : north to south of America.
Sleeping
You can’t park where you want. You have to choose a safe and “non-bothering-for-anyone” spot. Especially in the winter, there less possibilities, because of the snow in the trails. Parking at friend’s is probably the easiest thing to do. Although, be aware of the neighborhood… Make sure they’re okay having an extra vehicle around. In Whistler, it’s impossible and prohibited to park almost anywhere. Even in the P4, where it’s an overnight parking, you’re allowed to leave your van there but not sleeping in it…
Showering
For us, we find the gym pass very convenient. Plus it’s motivating ourselves to get fit! Compare to a rent it’s pretty cheap, it’s providing you a shower place every night (open late and 7 days on 7) and the most important thing : you’re independant.
Eating
Cooking is challenging… Of course, the kitchen is not very big, but, as long as it’s functionnal, it’s all good! When we don’t feel like cooking, we either go have a big soup at the Pasta Lupino (http://www.pastalupino.com/) or either take out some delicious sushis at Sushi to go, located in the Whistler visitor center information. ***Something to remember : evitate cooking meet of fish, unleast you’re outside… I let you figure out why.
Other than that, life is great. No television. Only Internet. And it’s very easy to get a free wireless connexion, pretty much anywhere you go. Leaving in a small rolling house makes us sometimes regret the luxury of a bigger house, but the nostalgy doesn’t last for long… We realize how great it is to live this experience together, my husband, me, and our beautiful chocolate labrador, Apo.
